Description
Crossing Borders is the debut album from Highland fiddler, Graham Mackenzie, from Inverness. The album was commissioned by Celtic Connections in 2015 for the festival’s New Voices series.
Crossing Borders is a journey through the places that have influenced Graham and his music. It draws on the vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton cultures and the people who have inspired him. The album brings together traditional and classical styles in his own composition.
Written in four distinct parts, Crossing Borders reflects firstly on significant moments of Graham’s early years as a musician in the Highlands of Scotland. The second part, Manchester, is inspired by his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music and the music of the Irish community in the city. Following Manchester is Cape Breton, a section inspired by a study exchange Graham undertook in 2014. It features Strathspeys and Reels inspired by the driving style found on the island. Concluding the album is a return to his home, this time reflecting on his experiences at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and his developing interest in pipe music.
