Description
Very occasionally, a singer comes along with such a tantalisingly different vocal approach that compels the jazz world to realise this is someone worth knowing more about. One such singer is Victoria Bennett, a nominee in the 2013 Scottish Jazz Awards and possessor of one of the most remarkable voices to emerge onto the UK jazz scene in recent years. Victoria’s eagerly anticipated debut album, Little Jazz Bird; Vol. 1, is a masterpiece of carefully crafted arrangements evoking the very best from the golden age of American songbook jazz. Her vocal is mesmerising, hauntingly beautiful and tender in equal measure, lusciously inspired and influenced by some of her heroines – Blossom Dearie, Billie Holiday and the more contemporary Carol Kidd and Stacey Kent. This is one singer to watch.
